The Medicine Hat Mavericks are off to the Western Division Final to take on The Edmonton Prospects, after beating The Lethbridge Bulls in four games. The Mavericks will take on The Prospects in a best of five series beginning on August 6th.
Game one of the West Division Semi-Final had the Mavericks taking on The Bulls at Athletic Park, with the Mavericks coming away with the 5-2 win. Alex Dafoe would pick up the win for The Mavericks in game one pitching six innings strong, striking out seven Bulls batters. David Salgueiro, in the bottom of the first inning started off the first round with a bang, hitting a solo home run over the left field wall to get the crowd excited early on. Salgueiro, and Louie Canjura would lead the offence for The Mavericks in game one both going 2-3 with an RBI.
Game two would not go as positively for The Mavericks as they ran into a very good pitcher on the mound for The Bulls. The Bulls starter Luc Hebert would shut down The Mavericks bats for 8.1 innings, only giving up two runs, while striking out eleven bats. The Bulls would take the victory in this game 5-2. Sal Rodriguez hit his first home run of the playoffs in this game, and Nolan Rattai would go 3-4 in the loss.
Game three shifted gears to Spitz Stadium in Lethbridge, and the windy city witnessed plenty of hits from The Mavericks. The Mavericks would combine for sixteen hits in Game three, and would take the game from The Bulls 9-4. Jumpei Akanuma picked up the win on the mound giving up only three runs, in six innings. The Mavericks would hit three home runs this game, Zack Gray, and Jaxson Hooge hitting their first long bombs of the post season, and Sal Rodriguez who hit his second home run on back to back nights. Rodriguez, and Hooge would lead The Mavericks with three RBI each.
With The Mavericks leading the series 2-1, going into game four they did not want to mess around, and extend the series to five games. The Mavericks improved on their hit totals from game three, and combined for twenty-one hits in game four. The Mavericks would win game four, sending them off to the second round with a score of 17-4. Jared Libke picked up the win for the Mavericks pitching five innings, giving up three runs. Barry Caine pitched in relief in game four, pitching two innings, and striking out six batters. The Mavericks would hit another three home runs in this game, Zack Gray hit his second in back to back nights, Jordan Dray hit a home run in his only at bat of the game, and Colton Wright hit The Mavericks first grand slam of the playoffs. Carson Johnson would lead The Mavs with six RBI in the dominating performance.
The Mavericks, and Edmonton Prospects played six games against each other this past regular season, and both teams won three games. The Mavericks will host The Prospects at Athletic Park for games 1 and 2 of the West Division Final on August 6th, and 7th.
