The Medicine Hat Mavericks are off to a hot start in the 2018 Western Division Final, taking a 1-0 series lead over the Edmonton Prospects after a 10-4 win at Athletic Park.
Alex Dafoe got the start for The Mavericks in game one of the second straight series. Dafoe pitched five innings for The Mavericks giving up four runs to The Prospects, on five hits, and four strikeouts as well. Barry Caine, Sean Cruz, and Tyler Shumpert all pitched in relief in game one, and between the three of them they gave up no runs from innings six to nine.
The bats were on fire at Athletic Park for the first time in these playoffs. In game one The Mavericks put up a total of fifteen hits combined. David Salgueiro led the way at the plate hitting a two run home run, his second home run of the playoffs. Salgueiro was not the only one to help The Mavs get ten runs, as Colton Wright went 3-5 in the game with three singles, and three RBI. Carson Johnson hit The Mavericks first triple of the post season, a triple that scored Salgueiro from second. Colton Wright, and Carson Johnson are now both tied for the team lead for RBI in these playoffs, with nine each. Lastly, Sal Rodriguez also had a major impact at the plate in game one with two singles, and a double that was lined off of the left field wall. Rodriguez would also go 3-5 with three RBI, raising his total to seven in this post season run.
Game two goes this evening at Athletic Park between the Medicine Hat Mavericks, and Edmonton Prospects at 7:05 pm.
Come watch The Mavericks attempt to have the same result as last night, and take a 2-0 series lead back to Edmonton for game number three.
