Game one of The Western Major Baseball League championship series is in the books, and The Medicine Hat Mavericks have a 1-0 series lead over The Regina Red Sox.
On Sunday, August 12th the two teams met at Athletic Park for game one, and The Medicine Hat Mavericks treated the home fans to an 8-5 win, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. The game was packed with plenty of offence all the way through from either side, starting right off the top in inning number one. Regina got their five runs in the game scoring twice in the first inning, two more in the fifth, and once more later on in the seventh. The Mavericks gave the fans at Athletic Park plenty to cheer about all evening, scoring in eight out of nine innings, the only inning they left scoreless was inning number three.
Carson Johnson, and Zack Gray provided plenty of run support for The Mavericks, with Johnson going 1-3 in the game with three RBI. Zack Gray hit 2-5 in game one, with a solo home run, his third of the post season. The bottom of the order for The Mavericks came to play, combining for seven hits between the four batters. Nolan Rattai, Louie Canjura, and Jordan Dray each had two hits to start the championship series.
Alex Dafoe got the start in game one, and picked up his third win of the playoffs pitching 6.1 innings strong giving up all five runs to The Red Sox, on eight hits, while striking out four batters. Ryan Czanstkowski, Sean Cruz, and Tyler Shumpert pitched in relief throwing 2.2 innings combined giving up no hits at all to The Red Sox to close game one.
Standout performers from The Red Sox were left fielder Wesley Moss, who went 2-4 in the game with one home run, his first of the post season. Phil Langlois the third baseman who went 2-3 at the plate, with an RBI triple, and Brooks Stotler, the center fielder who had two solo home runs in the game. Stotler now has five home runs in these playoffs.
Game two of the championship series is tonight, August 13th at Athletic Park. First pitch between these two teams will be at 7:05 pm. Come down to The Mavericks box office early to pick up some tickets for game two. Tickets for the Source One Patio, MH Brew Co Dugout Deck, Premium seats, and Bleacher seats are all available for purchase.
