While it is definitely a less than desirable 8th consecutive loss for the red and white last nights contest against Okotoks provided a sigh of relief and hope for the squad. Sitting in fifth place in the Western Division the 6 and now 12 Mavericks forced the 13 and 4 Dawgs to the brink proving they are a better team then the standings show.
The Mavericks forced the Dawgs to stay with them all the way till the very last batter in the bottom of the ninth and fell just short 4-3 in by far the most entertaining game of the season.
After a very quick first few innings both teams settled in and provided great entertainment for the crowd of just over 500.
While the batting ability of the Dawgs was on clear display, the Mavericks and Austin Sojka responded keeping them in the game going back and forth all evening long.
Nolan Rattai and Collin Klingensmith were remarkable at the 2nd base and shortstop spots for the Mavericks making catches turning double plays and in Rattai’s case, swinging the bat pretty well too!
In an article with the Medicine Hat News, Head coach of the Okotoks Dawgs Marc Schmidt said
“ They are a way better team then their record shows, they’re a lot better than people think. “
It’s safe to say that a message was sent throughout the league and although the Mavericks have some ground to make up in the standings. They now appear to be back on track and will look to last nights game as a turning point and a building block for what the Mavericks hope will be a successful season.
The Mavericks return home Friday to begin a 3 game series with Edmonton. Tickets are available at the front office.
