While Mother Nature benefited the Mavericks last week in Lethbridge, she didn’t do the same in Regina yesterday as game two and game three both went the way of the Regina Red Sox.
The Mavericks were forced to finish a rained out game two then play a shortened seven-inning game three on Wednesday evening.
The Red Sox were relentless in both games shutting out the Mavericks 13-0 over the course of 13 innings ultimately sweeping the series in convincing fashion.
After the first game (second of the series) finished, a half hour break was given to both teams and game three of the series commenced. Although the red and white were unable to score any runs, the pitching group for the Mavericks were able to pick up the slack and create an entertaining short game of baseball.
Jaymon Cervantes pitched a complete game allowing just one earned run on five hits. The Tuscan Arizona product is currently in his second season with the Mavericks and has already pitched more this year than all of last year combined. Cervantes is a junior from Minot State University and has gained the trust of Coach Tom Vessella. Vessella was pleased with his starter's performance in game three.
" Jaymon did a fantastic job last night. Im really happy with the way he pitched for us. He got ahead, threw strikes and kept them off balance"
In other news, PJ Garcia has arrived in Medicine Hat. The Senior who plays out of Oklahoma has been brought in to provide some depth for the Mavericks at the shortstop spot. Fans can expect to see the 6’0 right-hander in action very soon, possibly even as early as this weekend.
The Mavericks (9-16) return home Saturday night to begin a 3 game series with the Yorkton Cardinals (2-18). Tickets are available at the front office.
( The Mavericks play in the WCBL league with a focus on building athletes and character people)
