The Mavericks have now pushed their win streak to an impressive fifth game after a successful Fourth of July victory against Edmonton last night.
The unofficial playoff game was one the coaching staff and the players had circled on their calendars all week considering the Mavericks were chasing the Prospects for that coveted final playoff spot.
The 3-2 win for the Mavericks leapfrogs the Prospects and puts them in a playoff spot at this time just a half a game ahead of Edmonton.
The Mavericks speed was also on display after a coaching decision was made to bring in Tito Jones to pinch run, the Mavericks were eventually able to get a runner home after Prospect pitcher Brendan Owens walked the go ahead run.
Jon Guardado has seemed to find his stride after a hot and cold first few starts, Guardado has now been able to successfully close out back to back home games for the Mavericks with amazing velocity and speed on his pitches. The University of Arizona product came in highly touted and is beginning to live up to those early rumors on what his ability is.
The infield for the Mavericks was also forced to go to work last night turning 4-3 groundouts and creating double plays to keep the flow of the game moving and avoid getting trapped in innings.
The Mavericks have done a remarkable job of battling through adversity and have found a way to make up for what seemed like a lost season earlier on in the year. The red and white are aware though that in order to stay in the playoff fight, the dogfight has just begun and things are only going to get tougher. Something the Mavericks don’t mind doing.
