When you look at the scoreboard around the league, Saturday night’s Mavericks game will certainly catch your eye. The red and white dominated the Moose Jaw Express scoring 15 runs and adding 17 hits on their way to a dominating victory.
Collin Klingensmith continued his incredible hot streak going ⅗ skyrocketing his batting average to .320 on the season. Good performances from Freddy Walker (2/4) and Austin Sojka who went ⅔ drawing two walks in the big win including a home run all contributed to the successful evening.
While the Mavericks are seeing success at home plate, it goes without being said that the defense have cleaned things up as well. Infielders Nolan Rattai, PJ Garcia and Sal Rodriquez continue to make things happen and have really seemed to find that chemistry that was missing earlier on in the season. According to fan-favorite Rodriquez, it’s been a process especially after a difficult start but now it’s crunch time and things couldn’t be improving at a better time.
“The biggest key is communication. We talk during all the at-bats about positioning, the hitter's tendencies, and trying to give each other the best possible advantage. After playing together and getting familiar, it’s almost instinct to know what others are doing.”
Rodriquez also went on to say putting their heads down and just simply going to work has been another reason why the team has been able to continually bounce back.
With a well deserved day off after 13 hours of baseball in the last three days, the Mavericks will now head to Edmonton on Tuesday where the stakes will be even more heightened.
The Mavericks as previously mentioned have found themselves right in the middle of the “Wild West” playoff battle. With divisional matchups against Edmonton, back to back wins would likely secure the Mavericks an eventual playoff spot barring a complete undoing in the last few games.
The now 3rd place Mavericks find themselves just a game back of second-place Lethbridge Bulls. The flag has been waved to start the final race of the season.
