This season the Medicine Hat Mavericks are celebrating the time that our owner Greg Morrison has spent with the team. This upcoming season will be Greg's tenth season as the owner of the Medicine Hat Mavericks Baseball Organization. Our media team got to meet with Greg, and ask him a few questions to get to know him better, and find out what the past ten years have meant to Greg.
Dawson: Ten years ago, what peaked your interest in owning a Western Major Baseball League team?
Greg: I moved home, and had retired from my own personal career, and kind of fell into the position actually. I came to a game one day, not knowing exactly what the WMLB was. I found the game to be very exciting, with good quality baseball, and an oppurtunity came up and I jumped at it.
Dawson: What has been your philosophy on changing the culture of the Mavericks organization?
Greg: From playing on many minor league teams, kicking around in the minors for twelve years I found I was lucky enough to be a part of a couple championships that were not always the most talented bunch of guys. But there was always something unique with these teams where everybody played for one another, and not just for themselves, and that is something we aspire for here. We are all a big team here whether you work in the concession, or are our starting ace on the mound. We want to make it a positive experience for everyone whether you are a baseball player or someone who works here over the summer.
Dawson: What has been one of your favourite memories over the past ten years?
Greg: There are a lot of great memories, but obviously winning a championship was spectacular. The timing of winning a championship the year after we went through the flood was something that was engrained in everyone's minds. We had to go play up at Jefferies Park, where we did struggle more with attendance but had the winningest record in WMLB history going 39-7 but fell short that year. The next year we squeaked into the playoffs and won it all, so that two year span of learning how to deal with adversity, and learning that it's not all about talent were two big years for us.
Dawson: What should Mavericks fans expect from the team this summer?
Greg: The team has a nice deep roster. We have a twenty seven man roster this year, we had some years earlier where we only had twenty to twenty one guys. We've found out that depth of pitching is really what matters. We are very fortunate to have some great speed in the outfield, and some good hitters, a few local guys, and a big team effort. We want the fans to come out and watch us win or lose, know that these guys hustled to their positons, and they played hard. These guys love to be out in the community, going to schools and promoting physical fitness, and helping out in any way they can.
Dawson: What are your top priorities for the season, and what direction would you like to take the team in the future?
Greg: We want to continue to grow, we have added a few patios now, and are trying to make it a place where folks can come out who are not necessarily die hard baseball fans, but come in small groups and enjoy themselves. Our goal is to be one of the premier outdoor events of the summer. We have twenty four games, so we have twenty four events, and hopefully some playoffs to go along with that. We are really focused on great fan experience, and making Athletic Park one of the best baseball parks in Alberta.
Remember fans come down to our Mavericks Fan Fest on May 29th from 5-7 PM where you can meet the players, listen to live music, play games, and get food and beverage.
Also come down on May 31st for our season, and home opener against the Brooks Bombers with first pitch at 7:05 PM.
