The Medicine Hat Mavericks have now completed their first two weeks of the season, and they currently sit on top of the Western Division with a remarkable 8-2 record. The Mavericks started the season 0-2, but have since won 8 straight games to take them to the top of the leaderboard. Today we caught up with a few of our first year Mavericks who are all playing in Canada for the first time, and asked them a couple questions about their first two weeks playing in the Western Major Baseball League. The players interviewed were; Jumpei Akanuma who is a starting pitcher from Kyoto, Japan, Carson Johnson the shortstop from Juneau, Arkansas, David Vilches who plays catcher, and is from Sheridan, Arkansas, and first baseman Zack Gray from Cincinnatti, Ohio.
We asked the boys how they were enjoying Canada, and how their time has been through two weeks living in Medicine Hat, with Vilches saying that Medicine Hat has been really good, and he likes it here. Carson Johnson said he loves Medicine Hat, Zack Gray said that although life has been very tiring here, he really likes the city, and Jumpei said that the city is beautiful, and he loves how the team is playing right now.
The Mavericks currently hold an 8 game win streak, and have a record of 8-2. With only a few returning players, and not much WMBL experience getting off to a hot start is not so easy. The players were asked what the key factor to the teams early success has been with Jumpei saying that the team is hitting, and pitching well with the starters barely giving up any runs. Vilches, and Johnson both agreed that the pitching staff has had a major impact on the teams record with Vilches specifying the bullpen has been a major asset to the Mavs this season. Zack Gray said that the team chemistry has really helped the hot start, with everyone sticking together, and being a family.
With the Mavericks playing so well at the moment everyone in the clubhouse has to be enjoying themselves right now, so we asked what their favourite moment of the season has been for them so far. Zack Gray, and Akanuma agreed that beating Okotoks on June 13th was their favourite moment, as the two teams went into that game tied for first place in the Western Division. Vilches kept his answer simple, and said winning has been his favourite part of the season, and Carson Johnson said it had to be laughing at the Joe Rogan Podcast with all the guys, and getting the chance to play everyday.
The Mavericks are 8-2 on the season, and are currently in first place in their division. Tonight they play the second place Okotoks Dawgs, who currently have a 7-3 record. Come watch the Mavericks try to extend their win streak tonight at Athletic Park, at 7:05 PM.
