It's the beginning of July, and we are officially half way through the 2018 Western Major Baseball League season, and life is looking pretty good for the Medicine Hat Mavericks. The team is currently in first place in the Western Division with a 20-3 record, and have 5.5 games in hand over the Okotoks Dawgs. The team has set a new franchise record in attendance, and last but not least the team is on their second 10 game winning streak of the season.
The Mavericks have not lost a game since June 18th against the Edmonton Prospects when they lost on the road 8-5, but since then they have gone on a tear through the league, distancing themselves from second in the divison. 8 of the 10 wins for the Mavericks have all come on the road. The Mavericks have had to deal with two seperate five game road trips in the past two weeks, but that clearly has not affected their play.
To start the win streak the Mavericks beat the Fort McMurray Giants three times in a four game series in Fort McMurray, with one game being postponed due to rain. The Mavericks then came home to play one game against the Lethbridge Bulls in a home and home series, where the Mavericks won both the home, and away games. After the two games against the Bulls, and the win streak now at five games, the Mavericks took to the road to play their first games in Saskatchewan in 2018. The Mavericks first stop was in Melville, where the Mavs took two games from the Millionaires, then did the same against the Yorkton Cardinals the next two nights extending their win streak to nine games. With nine wins in a row, the Mavericks came home for a game on Canada Day against the Swift Current 57's where the Mavericks had to battle back and come from behind 3-0 to win the game in extras 4-3 on a Louie Canjura walk off, and get their 10th win in a row.
It's been an impressive two weeks for the Mavericks travelling from Northern Alberta, to Medicine Hat, and Lethbridge, then all through southern Saskatchewan, and back home again while picking up wins everywhere they went.
The bats have been as hot as the weather in Medicine Hat, as seven Mavericks batters have 10 hits or more, over the winning streak. Carson Johnson has been leading the way for the Mavs with 18 hits, and 13 runs. Colton Wright has 13 hits over the streak, and Julien Ly has found his groove and has 12 hits over the past 10 games. These three are followed by Sal Rodriguez who has 10 hits, and 12 RBI, David Salgueiro who has 10 hits, and 12 runs, Louie Canjura also has 10 hits, 9 runs, and 8 RBI, and Zack Gray who has 10 hits in the run as well.
Jumpei Akanuma, Barry Caine, and Tyler Shumpert have been picking up a majority of the wins on the 10 game run picking up 2 wins each.
The Mavericks will look to extend the winning streak to a season long 11 games tonight at Athletic Park at 7:05 pm when they play the Eastern Division leading Weyburn Beavers, who are currently 20-5 on the season.
