After sweeping a two game set against the Weyburn Beavers, and winning their first three games of July, the Mavericks have now won twelve games in a row, and have improved to 22-3. The Mavericks currently hold a six game lead over the 2nd place Okotoks Dawgs.
Tuesday, July 3rd proved to be one of the biggest, and most important wins of the season for the Mavericks, as they beat the Eastern Division first place team Weyburn, twice on back to back nights both times coming back from behind, winning with a walk-off. Remarkably all three of the Mavericks wins in July have been come from behind walk off wins.
Tuesday's 6-5 Mavericks win was a pitchers dual from the start. The score was 0-0 between the Beavers, and Mavericks going into the 6th inning before the Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 6th. Jaymon Cervantes pitched a strong outing for the Mavericks going 6 strong only giving up 5 hits, and 2 runs. The Beavers would extend the lead to 4-0 in the top of the 7th before the Mavericks finally got a run in the bottom of the 7th, to make it 4-1 after 7 complete innings. Daniel Crooks was as close to perfect as he could get on the Mound for the Beavers pitching 8 complete innings only giving up 2 hits, and 1 run despite hitting Mavericks batters five times. Mavericks went into the 9th down 4-1 where they would complete the comeback making the game 4-4 going into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th the Beavers would get one run off of Mavericks debutant Ryan Czanstkowski to make it 5-4 going into the bottom of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th Nolan Rattai would hit a double, and would then score from 2nd on a Louie Canjura double as well. With the score now 5-5, and Canjura on 2nd base, the next three Mavericks batters; David Vilches, Michael Conn, and Julien Ly would all be walked to bring Canjura around to score to get the Mavericks 12th win in a row 6-5.
David Salgueiro, and Zack Gray both went 0-5 on the day. That shows the testemant as to how hard the entire Mavericks roster works when two of the Mavericks star producers have an off day, and they still come out with the win.
Jaxson Hooge, after not playing for 6 days went 2-2 on the day, with a 3 RBI triple in the 9th which will prove to be one of the most clutch hits of the season for the Mavericks. Louie Canjura had 2 hits as well going 2-5, with 1 run, and 1 RBI. Ryan Czanstkowski picked up the win in relief for the Mavs, in his Mavericks debut pitching 2 innings giving up 1 run, on only 1 hit.
The Mavericks have a long weekend ahead of them at Athletic Park starting tonight July 6th, as we take on the Edmonton Prospects tonight, and tomorrow July 7th both games at 7:05 pm. We also play at home on Sunday the 8th as we play the Swift Current 57's at 2:05 pm, and Monday the 9th at 7:05 pm as we take on the Okotoks Dawgs.
Come out, and cheer on the Mavs as they look to continue the win streak on this very sunny weekend.
