PLAY BALL!!

The Mavericks are pleased to announce the signing of Joel Manfredi to the 2010 Mavericks coaching staff. Coach Manfredi is currently coaching at Merced College, California (Blue Devils) attaining his Masters in English. He is credited for recruiting Jason Hague (CF) and Cameron Martin (RHP) to last season's roster. Although only in his second season as a coach, Joel bring a professional playing background to the Mavericks as a former teammate of Greg Morrison (Head Coach/ Owner) in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

“I can thank the social media Facebook for reconnecting with Joel. I found out he was coaching and his word is gold when it comes to recommending players. He really helped out last season with the players he sent us and is helping us with recruiting for the 2010 season.

Anytime you can coach with someone you played with, it is a huge bonus.” (Greg Morrison)

When asked about returning to Medicine Hat and coaching with Coach Morrison he had this to say;

“When Greg contacted me about the opportunity to come back to Medicine Hat as a coach I immediately jumped at the offer. Knowing Greg from our playing days, I knew that our ideologies on baseball were similar, and this would be the type of team that was dedicated to success. I can't wait to get to Medicine Hat and contribute to turning the Mavericks into the champions of the WMBL”.

Additional Information on Joel Manfredi:

Attended Sacramento City Junior College before being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994. Played two years as a catcher in the Dodgers organization, including a season with Greg Morrison on the Great Falls Dodgers (Pioneer League 1994) then went on to get his Bachelor's Degree from San Francisco State University. He has been an assistant coach at Merced Junior College for the past two years and is currently working on obtaining his Master's Degree from Stanislaus State University.

MEDICINE HAT MAVERICKS SIGN BURKE, FLORKO AND GREENE

The Mavericks have re-signed three impact players from the 2009 season. Geoff Burke, RHP (UBC Thunderbirds) began the season in the bullpen but finished the year as one of the Mav's top starting pitchers. The 6'7 right hander had an impressive 15 scoreless innings in the 2009 season playoffs with 2 wins and 0 losses, holding opposing batters to a .148 BA.

Ashton Florko, LHP (UBC Thunderbirds) also became one of the Mavericks' top starters after starting the season in the bull pen. A lefty whose fastball touches 91 mph, Ashton can dominate the strike zone. He may not be in Medicine Hat for long as he is eligible for the June Major League Draft and is a very projectable pitcher in the minds of professional scouts.

Brian Greene, RHP (Montreat Cavaliers) was the closer for the Mavericks last season. The submarine pitcher proved to be the model of consistency from the bullpen and seemed to thrive in pressure situations. Greene had a season ERA 0.75 in 24 innings.

“These three guys got better and better as the season went on. They are great for the clubhouse too because they are cool under pressure and can be the types of players the younger guys can lean on”. (Greg Morrison)
